Scent travels faster to the brain than sight or sound. When we breathe in aromatics in the air, our olfactory cells send a signal to the limbic system, the primitive part of our brains that deals with emotions and survival. These scents directly affect a response in our nervous system, altering our moods, bringing our bodies into a regulated or dysregulated state. Once the signal passes through the Limbic System, it then goes onto the Olfactory Cortex, which identifies the scent after the response has been triggered.
Aromatherapy is deceptively powerful and can quickly regulate our bodies, grounding us into a state of calm and safety.
